I have used this 10 year letter in many workshops, over the past 20 years, with a variety of different audiences. The purpose of the letter is to give you a glimse of what life will be like for you ten years into the future. I've had some people say "why", or 'how can a letter predict your future"? I can tell you, I fully believe life will be very close to the way you expect it to be. When you work through this ten year letter to yourself and you visualize yourself living in your future, you are feeding your subconscious something very powerful. A very strong message that will be remembered long after you have forgotten the letter you wrote.
My first 10 year letter to myself:
Let me continue my story. This ten year letter was first introduced to me, by a grade 12 Home Economics teacher. The class was a 'housing' class. We each got to design a home, from style, layout, furniture placement, every detail. To make the project real for us, the teacher asked that we all be 'realistic' and design a house that we would be living in ten years into the future...and that house should not be more than 2,000 sq ft. Well, I was a fairly rebelous 17 year old, so I set out in my housing project to produce a 10 year letter to myself, describing my life and why my lifestyle would warrant having a house over 2000 sq ft. I put a lot of effort and thought into that letter and my project. In the end I received a good grade. Then the project was put away like we put away all school projects and I never looked at it, or thought about it again. At least that is what I thought.
Advance eight years, I was now 25 years old, my mother was in the kitchen of our new home washing dishes and putting them away when I walked into the house with the keys from our lawyer. This new home now officially belonged to my husband and myself. Mom came to me with a hug and said, "Congratulations, I can't believe this home is yours. It is beautiful." Suddenly this amazing feeling overcame me, and I thought, "Na-Na, Na-Na, Nah, Nah!" It surprised me! Where did that come from ... and the days following when I thought more about it, I came to the realization I was 'living my 10 year letter, my dream' ... it was only eight years after writing that letter and our new home was 2600 sq ft and the home of my dreams. It was amazing. Long after I had forgotten that letter and the project, it had influenced much of my life, my decisions, until that dream was fulfilled.
I'm happy to say I still live in that house ... it did prove to be the home of my dreams. I can only hope this 10 year letter has the same impact on your life. Where will you be, ten years into your future?
How to write your 10 year letter to yourself
Step 1) Today's date for your letter becomes today's date, ten years into the future. So for this example, today is June 28, 2021. (wow that is even hard to write. I want you to think of the time of year, and where you might be at this time of year in 2021).
Step 2) Your address should be where you will be living, ten years into the future. Now, you might be thinking how will I know that. But you likely know more than you realize. What country will you be living in? Province/State? City? Your street address may represent a country home (Example: Rural Route #1) or Lakeshore Blvd., or Oceanside Drive, or Main Street, etc. You decide, make up your address.
Step 3) Salutation: Dear First name:
Step 4) First paragraph: In the first paragraph describe yourself (your age), and the ages of people, pets and things around you. Let this first paragraph set the scene for you ten years into your future.
Step 5) Next couple of paragraphs: Talk about what has been happening in your life over the past ten years. How did you get to June 2021?
Step 6) Sign off, "Life doesn't get any better than this" or something suitable that makes sense to you. Sign your name.
Here is a template that you can use - enjoy the process - good luck.
