What are the 'little things' that are really the 'important things' during this time in your life?
"Little Things" Lesson - Be interesting and fun to be around.
1) I had the opportunity to visit an 82 year old friend who was working her last day on the job. Over 40 years in a position serving others ... I had been one of her students over 30 years ago. I visited her on the job, with flowers, on her last day. I was honoured to visit her, and to witness a tear in her eye when she saw me. It was obviously an emotional day for her. An amazing lady, an amazing career. The little thing was "taking the time (for a 10 minute visit) to make a difference in someone's life". This stop was every bit as therapeutic for me as it was for my friend.
2) My grandmother, soon to be 98 years old, is still living in her own home. Her son, turning 80 this summer, lives with her. How fortunate they both are - whether they realize it or not. My visit with grandma this week was fabulous - she walked on her own to greet me, set a place at the table for me to eat with them, and then walked outside to the patio to enjoy the fresh summer breeze with me after dinner. As we enjoyed the backyard, the flowers, the wind blowing in our hair, and the birds at the feeder - it made me really appreciate how fortunate we really are. Our visits are always great - just not enough of them according to Grandma, and I agree. I know her door is open anytime for me to visit - I want to grow up to be just like her. The little thing was stopping to visit family members for no reason at all - enjoying the outdoors, and the moment.
"Little Things" lesson from these visits ... be interested, be interesting, be open, be fun to be around and people will want to be around you. You don't start being this way at 70, 80 or 90 ... it is the way you embrace life, your entire life.
